We live on a small farm in the foothills of the coast range about 30 miles west of Portland, Oregon. Since we were first married, we wanted to live on acreage and finally found the right place in February 2000. Raising lamas was feasible even with our day jobs in the city. I found out about alpacas accidentally. Several years ago, my mother and I went to a plant sale at the Washington County fairgrounds. Next door to the sale, CABA was sponsoring an alpaca show. I was fascinated with them and wanted to take two home that day. However, we lived in the suburbs at the time and didn't have the facilities to keep them. We started with two llamas in May 2000 and added three huacaya alpacas in November, 2000. Our female alpacas had their first babies in September of 2001. We bought Pink Floyd, a stunning light rose grey herdsire, in November 2003. Our current herd size is 9 1/4 alpacas and 3 llamas. |
